You know you are on to a winning book when you are equal parts sad to reach the end but at the same time desperate to see how it all plays out to the last page. The Loyal Heart by Shelly Shepard Gray is such a book - it twisted and turned it’s way, never dwelling too long on any one scene and feeling just the right amount of pace.When a group of confederate officers - incarcerated at the end of the war witness the death of their beloved fellow solider Lieutenant Phillip Markham, they wow that they will do all in their power to assist his now widow Miranda. To that end - officer Robert Traux is dispatched by the group to ascertain just what her current lot is and is their any thing they can do to honour the memory of their friend.
What greats Robert is far worse than he could have imagined. Miranda has become the town pariah - vilified by her fellow townsfolk convinced by rumour and lies about her late husband as a spy for the enemy. Robert books a room in the boarding house Miranda has opened of her family home in an effort to support herself and begins his assignment.
Little does he know that this simple act of assistance will embroil him in far more danger than he envisioned. Someone wants Miranda to sell up and leave and will go to all measure to see that she does.
As I said before - I loved the pacing and the drama that infused this love story. It was a pleasure to read and I look forward to further stories in this series to come. PS : The next one I have on preorder :)

The Loyal Heart A Lone Star Hero Love Story Shelley Shepard Gray 0025986345396 Books Reviews
Really enjoyed the story. It is obvious that Shelley researched the events that occurred during this time in history. I never new there where prisoners held during the war on an island. Well worth reading.
If you like Civil War romance you will not be disappointed.....this book had it all....I already pre ordered the next one.....
I understand Mrs. Gray is a respected author, but I found this book to fall short of well developed characters and interesting dialogue. There were brief moments of potential, but then the plot would repeat itself or, even at times, negate what was said previously.
Post Civil War and Love are the main topics of this book. I loved it. The characters were believable and the plot was very exciting!
I love this new series that Shelley is writing. I think she captures beautifully the commitment that soldiers of any era feel for each other, both in combat and afterwards. It's a love story, a mystery, and a historical piece all wrapped up in a single book! Very good, I look forward to more in this series.
Many books look good but fail. This one looked ok but went beyond good. I liked that it wasn't told from the winners side. I was a little concerned about some topics that can reflect my own traumas, but they were handled well. I even think some sections are quote worthy. But, authors, maybe a bit of warming about your story containing topics that may touch on certain mental health issues, should be included in the books description. This story touches on PTSD, depression, and suicide;
In captivity on Johnson’s Island, Ohio, Confederate Captain Devin Monroe and his small group of men decided to make a pact to always look out for each other. This came on the heels of burying yet another soldier from their unit. This time it was the youngest of them and his death really hit them hard. Nineteen-year-old Pvt. Rory Macdonald had died of pneumonia.
Conditions were difficult in a POW camp but, for Lieutenant Philip Markham, life there was more bearable due to the daily letters he received from his beloved wife Miranda. Phillip never made it home.
The men took the pact seriously and, after the war and their consequent release, Devin sent Robert Traux to check on Miranda. Phillip’s name had been tarnished and the town people were treating her poorly. Her mother-in-law and sister-in-law were trying to have her evicted from her home. To make ends meet, Miranda had turned her home into a boarding house and people, especially Phillip’s mother and sister, didn’t like that at all.
I don’t want to give the story away. Pick up a copy by New York Times Bestselling Author Shelley Shepard Gray and read Miranda’s story. Can she come out of the deep depression Phillip’s death and the treatment she’s receiving from everyone have put her in? Does she have to leave her home? How can Robert help her?
Thank you Shelley for another great read!!
