Anyone Can Cook Better Homes Gardens Cooking Better Homes and Gardens Tricia Laning 9780696232930 Books

I just bought Anyone Can Cook for a recently-retired family member who's as unfamiliar around the kitchen as I am in an auto shop. I wanted something with a solid foundation and ample descriptions of basics such as choosing, storing, and prepping fruits and veggies (a step which is often overlooked in "regular" cookbooks), a primer on kitchen tools (knives, utensils, appliances), and step-by-step guidance in addition to easy-to-prepare recipes. The first hundred pages or so are devoted to the differences between produce and tool tips (red, yellow or white onions? Cremini, enoki, button, morel, or portabello mushrooms? Springform or cake pan?). Also, recipes are ranked according to skill level, with 1 being easiest and 3 being easy.

Enter Better Homes and Gardens: Anyone Can Cook. Like millions of other housewives, I grew up using the Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook, and have several reincarnations, so I had no reservations about investing in Anyone Can Cook. Its organization is similar to the traditional BHG cookbook; i.e., appetizers, soups, salads, meats (including detailed charts of the various cuts), poultry, veggies, desserts, breakfast and more. However, many of the recipes are simplified and rely heavily on store-bought shortcuts such as refrigerated dough and precooked meats (in that respect, it reminded me of Betty Crocker Quick and Easy Cookbook: 30 minutes or less to dinner (Betty Crocker Books), so if you're put off by the idea of using so many processed foods in your recipes, you might want to invest in the original BHG cookbook. Of course, once you have a little more experience, you can whip up your own pasta sauce or use leftover roast to achieve the same effect with fewer preservatives.

The layout is stuffed with step-by-step photos and can be visually overwhelming at times, especially with the choice of bright colors. I noticed that several of the recipes are carryovers from other BHG publications such as Vegetarian Cooking (Better Homes & Gardens). Also, many of the recipes are ethnically influenced, including many with a Latin/Asian flair. If "exotic" doesn't appeal to you, you might want to steer clear.

For everyone else, this is a perfect, step-by-step introduction to the kitchen, including some simple baked goods, that will allow you to graduate to more difficult standard recipes once you've mastered the basics.

Anyone Can Cook Better Homes Gardens Cooking Better Homes and Gardens Tricia Laning 9780696232930 Books Reviews

Lots of great recipes to try and great directions. It does require some ingredients that I don't normally buy but I am willing to give it try.
However I hate the spiral binding this book. My first page did not get caught in the binding and its impossible to fix without taking out all the pages. There are sharp edges in the backside of the binder. They really need to rethink the binder as it is very tight and the pages do not turn easily. Most of my section tabs are bent.
A decent cookbook for a young teenager boy, I don't think he was very interested in learning how to cook. He'll be sorry. Alfa Female
When this cookbook was first released I bought copies for each of my children as well as all my nephews and nieces; they were all at the age where they were heading out on their own. Several of them have mentioned to me how much they have relied on this book and have found recipes that they really enjoy.

I consider myself to be an experienced cook, but there are times when I want something that is quick and simple, yet still nutritious and tasty. I have found numerous recipes that fit that bill.... (yes, I treated myself to a copy of the book too!). It's a great resource for beginners but doesn't talk 'down' to the the reader.
I'll be the first to admit I'm no cook. I never took classes, and definitely never attended culinary school. To put it bluntly, I'm proud of myself if I make a salad. This book changed all that! Never once do the publishers assume you just "know how" to do anything. At the front of the book there are instructions on how to boil eggs, chop onions, etc. For the recipes themselves, there are both step-by-step text AND picture instructions--which is especially helpful for a n00b like me. However, don't turn your culinary nose up just because some if the recipes are easy! They're also delicious! My friends mom loved the spinach artichoke dip I made so much I have now been dubbed "that girl who makes the awesome dip". Try it out! Just because the recipes are simple doesn't mean they aren't phenomenal!
Years ago (50) I received the red plaid Better Homes & Gardens cookbook....thank goodness! I didn't know how to boil water! Now...I am a decent, fairly good cook (so my friends say) & I am ever so thankful for that red plaid iconic BH&G first cookbook.

Now I have come across BH&G Anyone Can Cook cookbook! I knew I could trust that it would be good & it did not disappoint me at all. Great food photos, step by step photographs, easy to understand recipes & no off the wall odd ingredients. Great beginner cookbook. It's the kind of cookbook that would make a novice cook feel safe in trying these out. We have a soon to be bride in our family & this will be my wedding gift to them!
This was the first cookbook I owned (and the only one I still own) and I've purchased copies for several recent graduates. I think this book is particularly well designed for beginner cooks, both because of the rating system (giving a level of difficulty for each recipe) and because of the detailed section at the beginning covering the uses of different fruits and vegetables, as well as how to cut them. This is great for a young cook who is looking to explore new recipes and tastes!

I also think that the illustrations in this book are substantially more helpful than in the average cookbook. There are beautiful glossy pictures of the finished product to inspire you, but also smaller photos of the steps along the way that can really help you achieve results as beautiful as the pictures show! I've also looked around America's Test Kitchen cookbook, which is the other main contender for having the most useful illustrations, but I personally get a lot more out of seeing actual color photographs rather than black and white illustrations.

This book simply isn't long enough to introduce a seasoned cook to enough new recipes to be worthwhile, but I would wholeheartedly recommend it for anyone who's just getting started or wanting to ease their way into more difficult recipes.
