McCrumb uses various metaphors and allusions and a compelling story to analyze man's repetitive mistakes as well as his sacrifices. And as it turns out, some are willing to die and do die for their right, for their land.
But not only is man affected, nature has also suffered due to scavengers. even bird populations have been altered by plundering, ie. Starlings destroyed the songbird, Bewick's Wren, and a species of mourning doves wiped out by hunters. Even Rosewood became extinct.
It is obvious that this book was thoroughly researched. Daniel Boone is crucial to the story and is beautifully portrayed by a true-to-spirit impersonator. I was constantly learning from him.

This is a wonderful combination of history and a good story. I've always found the culture of the Appalachias fascinating and McCrumb beautifully creates two stories -- an old one that shows a different time and a modern one that shows how little things change.
Sharon Mc Crumb's Rosewood Casket is fast paced and totally enjoyable. The authentic storyline blends strong characters with mountain legend producing an amazing plot. The characters are richly entrenched in their mountain heritage, yet struggling to maintain their escape from it.
Excellent! Recommend it highly.
Book contains very different and interesting phrases. More "country" than I've experienced in the past. Funeral actions by family typical but interesting to read.
I especially like Sharon McCrumb! She is a great story teller for the Appalachian mountain area. The Rosewood Casket is no exception as it details the Stargill family.
Another great Spencer Arrowood, Nora Bonesteel book. A great weekend read for those who love mysteries, Appalachia, and history. Sharyn McCrumb has a gift for transmitting history to those of our time.
Sharyn McCrumb is one of my favorite writers. I have read almost all of her Ballad books, some twice. The Rosewood Casket is absolutely excellent. She is a great historical fiction writer; I trust her research. Can't recommend her books enough! My absolute favorite is She Walks These Hills, the first of her books I read. I've read it twice and am about to read it again. A wonderful, wonderful story.
