This book has helped me feel less of an oddity. I really went into reading this book with the attitude of, another book bashing Christianity without really understanding it. Not so. Christian Controversies Seeking the Truth Scott S Haraburda PhD 9780988607217 Books Reviews
I've just completed reading the book by author Scott S. Haraburda, and am very impressed! It's obvious much research and thought went into this book, and I thoroughly enjoyed the author's personal stories. Some from his career are lessons for all of us, and the one from his childhood where he discussed his elementary schooling in a Catholic school and the treatment received from a nun there was presented it in a most amusing way, even though this touches on a truly common issue back in the 1960's. This is one of the best and most original philosophy books I have ever read, and I highly recommend it!
This book is hugely interesting, entertaining and educational; and it's a must-read for those who, like me, have wondered about the backgrounds and histories of various religions. Dr. Haraburda's style is down-to-Earth, enlightening, with interesting analogies and insights. I've recommended this book to many.
This book will challenge you to think out of your comfort zone. The author's insight into Christianity is truly appreciated. The way he approaches the issues of biblical inconsistencies and his insight and logical discussion of controversial subjects will stimulate your mind. Jesus taught by asking controversial questions and we should be encouraged to do the same. Respected is the author's years of research, his reading of hundreds of references, his assessing the empirical evidence, and his understanding of history that has gone into this work. I also appreciate the relating of his experiences from his personal life.
I do agree with the author that he can summarize the truth that we seek into three words that he knows to be the absolute truth.
GOD LOVES YOU
Dr. Haraburda's sincere and honest treatment of questions surrounding the Bible are thought-provoking and interesting. And although he invites us to read with an open mind and common sense, diehard Christians of many structured religions might have a difficult time facing the truth. And what about Christian leaders in centuries before who have gone through Scripture to pick and choose what to keep in and what must go? How are issues like this justified? Based on that alone brings up many issues that many dare not think about, let alone discuss.
Yet, brilliantly, Dr. Haraburda does not claim to have the answers, nor does he tell us what to think. Unlike many Christian leaders who pull us in claiming to have the "right" answers about what God "thinks" and "wants." Instead, the author tells us that he loves God and gives us insight into his own life, philosophy, and gracious ethics modeled on what we know about Christ. Included here are many insightful stories; my favorite is his recollection of being a first-grader subjected to a paddling by a nun, which today would be considered child abuse.
Bravo to the author for bringing these issues to light. Can we, as Christians, read this book without passing harsh judgment on the author? It is a brave and honest soul who takes us to the road less traveled, and I recommend this book wholeheartedly.
In the same vein as "Bible Bullies How Fundamentalists Got The Good Book So Wrong," this book challenges fundamentalists who claim that the King James Version of the Bible is the Word of God. Daring to question the divine nature of the rather human process of choosing which scrolls to include in the Bible and which to exclude, this work joins a growing number of thoughtful analyses of Scripture, centering upon the question of who was this man, Jesus the Christ, and what it means to be a Christian.
Works of this nature will be rejected by close-minded fundamentalists who prefer to pick and choose what they quote from the Bible--primarily to condemn others--but will be manna from heaven for those who wish to approach their Christian faith with love for their fellow man.
So many Christians are closed minded and read the Bible literally when in fact the Bible is full of contradiction, rules and consequences,
things we wouldn't think of doing today. These Christians are like robots blindly letting themselves be led by others without thinking.
Scholars argue constantly and still cannot agree on many issues. The author does a very good job of putting forth both sides of these issues and will then say, "in my opinion"...a fresh approach to the issue.
Religion has evolved just as science and technology have evolved. Religion is based on faith, and science is based on assumptions. Both can make mistakes. (i.e. "the earth is flat", or, "If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out")
The author has done a vast amount of research and has put together a very good book for resource. The book is well written and is especially good for the young Christian or those who have not done any searching or reading. As he says, "so many people go along blindly believing whatever their parents or teachers or preachers tell them. they don't listen with an open mind"
I liked the thought questions at the end...I also liked his charts, found them most helpful. The book is a well organized compilation of facts and contradictions, historical events, transcriptions and errors, etc. A very good resource book to have in your library.
Bottom line, the Bible is a series of stories. The details are not as important as the message, and the message is "God loves you, you are to love your neighbor"
This book has helped me feel less of an oddity. I really went into reading this book with the attitude of, another book bashing Christianity without really understanding it. Not so. Haraburda not only understands Christianity, he has over a thousand citations backing up his questions and conclusions.
